Welcome to the first Mermaid Tears Sea Glass Festival

On the seaside grounds of the picturesque Wood Islands Lighthouse, our festival will get under way.  We look forward to meeting all of you, collectors, artisans and enthusiasts alike.  Join us here for all your festival information as we get ready for what we hope is a fun event for the whole family.

In 2007, funded by a museum grant, a new exhibition was undertaken using a privately donated collection of sea glass found along Northumberland Strait.

The interest in this collection has been high. Mary MacKay, a feature writer for Prince Edward Island’s local newspaper, The Guardian, wrote a full-page story, “Jewels of the Sea,” about the collection and finding sea glass on the shores of PEI. The Canadian press picked up the story, and it has appeared in newspapers across Canada. The article also mentioned a proposed sea glass festival in 2009.

On July 17, a meeting was held with 17 people in attendance from across the Island. From this group a committee was formed to plan for the two-day event that was officially titled the “Mermaid Tears” Sea Glass Festival. A lecture and book signing featuring Richard LaMotte will take place on Friday, July 17, 2009 with the remainder of the festival activities taking place on Saturday, July 18.  It will be an event to entertain the whole family.
